Why new owners often replace locks
You may receive several keys at completion, but it is rarely possible to know how many older copies still exist. Previous occupants, relatives, cleaners, agents or contractors may have held keys. Changing or rekeying external-door locks restores control over who can enter.
Check every external entry point
Include the front and back doors, side or garage access, patio doors and any shared entrance for which you are responsible. Photograph both sides of each lock and the door edge so the locksmith can identify the likely type and dimensions.
Ask about the replacement standard
Tell the locksmith about any insurer requirements and ask for the exact lock specification, number of keys and warranty before approving the work. Better security is not only about the cylinder; the door, frame and fitted hardware need to work together.
